What are MMORPGs?

MMORPGs or Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games are social networking games, which allow players to socialize and personalize their character or avatar. Players are playing with others simultaneously across the globe with thousands if not millions of other players at a time. MMORPGs typically have different servers located in particular countries.


Here are some specific examples of various types of MMORPGs.

  • Fantasy (i.e. Everquest, Everquest 2 and Lord of the Rings Online)
  • Science fictions (i.e. EVE Online, Wild Star)
  • Modern day (i.e. Second Life, Secret World)


The virtual world

Players live in an alternative environment for a short time. In-game personalization is an important aspect of the MMORPGs technology and software has allowed developers to enhance visual graphics, character optimization, and in game environments. Personalization of one’s character can be a very personal and detailed process. Most games available on today’s market offer variations of hair color, skin color, and eye color, in addition to features such as facial hair, tattoos, and piercings are also available.  Clothing, height, and weight can all be customized as well, it depends on what the gamer wants.  For example, you may prefer a female character to have long black hair, a muscular build, with a height of 4 foot tall with black facial hair.

Players also have the option to play goal oriented and are usually veterans or established players. These types of players tend to be in guilds (in game organizations or large groups) and experienced players have logged hundreds of gaming hours, and they most likely have a set of armor that continuously needs upgrading.  On the other hand, gamers also have the option to socialize with other players or pursue non-social while playing.

Researchers indicated in the early 2000’s primarily males played MMORPGs. This is not true since females make up about 45% of the gaming population today. Your stereotypical gamer is not a young man or teenager in a dark room playing games for hours; in fact, research shows that all ages play MMORPGs ranging from 16 to 63. According to researchers, players who participate in MMORPGs have an increase in processing speed, spatial recognition, leadership skills, and decision-making which remains present throughout their daily lives.

MMORPGs have been on the market since 1995 offering an outlet from the real world. In early years, females were not attracted to these games due to the violence and most likely historical association with dungeons and dragons. This is not to say [by any means] that women or girls during this time were not interested in D&D or the systematics that went into playing roleplaying games.

Girls and women were excluded or most likely, their obligations left them unaware, of these games. In today’s market, women experience gaming themselves, which has led to a love for developing these games. Women now have a greater understanding of what other female gamers are looking for in a game; therefore, leading to more female developers, coders, and gamers.

How children can benefit from playing MMORPGs with Parental Guidance

Yes, children can play MMORPGs while being the appropriate age and being monitored by their parental unit. For example, Free Realms produced by Sony Online Entertainment is a children’s game. Free Realms offers children the chance to interact with each other, build their online house, and have a pet. By allowing the child the opportunity to build their house, it gives them a chance to use creative skills they may not have used previously. Secondly, placement and manipulation of on-screen 3D objects creates spatial recognition for the child. Finally, by allowing the child to take responsibility for their own online pet creates a sense of responsibility, and the child better understands how and why the pet needs to be taken care of and what may happen if they are not.

Can MMORPGs be considered a form of entertainment similar to television?

Yes, MMORPGs can take up several hours (4 to 8) a week, however, some researchers have indicated that it is no different from watching television for hours at a time.

In fact, when television was brought into people’s homes, they were scared of what it might do and how it would affect their daily lives. Players receive a form of gratification from television, and this same satisfaction is obtained by playing video games. Researchers have indicated that players play these games to release everyday stress, enhance their mood, or gain acceptance from a group. It has been expressed by gamers that they feel more accepted by online friends and group members due to the anonymity.
